French comic playwright. Born into a wealthy merchant family in Paris. Traveled throughout the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, where he was captured by pirates. He settled in Paris in 1683. He wrote plays such as "The Divorce" (1688) for Italian theatres, and "The Gambler" (1696), "The Absent-minded Man" (1697), and his masterpiece "The General Legate" (1708) for the Comédie-Française. He was acclaimed for his humorous yet simple plays, his clever plots, and his witty dialogue, and was considered the successor to Molière.
