This temple is of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Daitoku-ji school, located in Kitashinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo. Its correct name is Banshozan Tokai Zenji. The principal image is the Shaka Triad. It was built in 1639 (Kan'ei 16) by Tokugawa Iemitsu, with Takuan Soho as its founder, and has been under the patronage of successive Tokugawa families. In 1871 (Meiji 4), the temple was taken over as national property and the main temple was lost, so the sub-temple Gensho-in was rebuilt as a Buddhist hall. The temple's treasures include a silk-painted statue of the monk Takuan, a cultural asset designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government; Takuan Soho's "Commentary on the Theory of Genjin," three scrolls of Takuan's calligraphy; three books of official tools received at Tokai-ji Temple; and 124 books of official records of Tokai-ji Temple. The graves of Takuan and Kamo no Mabuchi are designated as national historic sites. [Akira Suganuma] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
