Japanese: 軍部 - ぐんぶ

A general term for the army, navy, and air force. It particularly refers to the political power of the upper echelons of the military, which had a relative independence from the government. In Japan, the Meiji state promoted militaristic policies, and adopted an independent command authority and the system of military ministers being active military officers (established in 1900), so the military had a strong sense of independence from the beginning, but after the Russo-Japanese War, its existence and power became clear. With the momentum for disarmament after World War I and the establishment of party politics, the military's power temporarily declined, with the system of military ministers being active military officers being revised in 1913, but it made a comeback due to social unrest caused by the Great Depression, and after the February 26 Incident, the system of military ministers being active military officers was reinstated, giving it an even greater say. It established dictatorial rule during the Pacific War. It was dissolved after Japan's defeat in the war.
