A former town in Naka district, western Shimane prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous and agriculture and forestry are the main industries. Miho and Okami on the Japan Sea coast, where the San'in Main Line runs, are fishing villages, and Misumi, the main settlement that was the castle town of the Misumi clan, is the commercial center, and is famous for Iwami washi paper. Particularly high-quality washi paper made from locally grown paper mulberry is known as "Sekishu-banshi", and its manufacturing technique was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1969. In 2009, it was registered as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage, and in 2014, it was registered and relisted as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage, along with Hosokawa-shi (Saitama prefecture, now one of "Ogawa-washi") and Honminoshi (Gifu prefecture), as "Washi: Japanese Handmade Washi Techniques". Natsumikan, persimmons, and lilies are also cultivated. Ohira cherry trees (natural monument) can be found. National Route 9 runs through the town. In October 2005, the towns of Asahi, Kinjo, and Yasaka in Naka District were incorporated into Hamada City.

島根県西部,那賀(なか)郡の旧町。大半が山地で農林業が主。山陰本線が通じる日本海岸の三保,岡見は漁村,三隅氏の城下町であった主集落三隅は商業の中心で,石見(いわみ)和紙を特産。地元産のコウゾを用いた特に良質の和紙は〈石州半紙〉として知られ,その製造技術は,1969年に国の重要無形文化財に指定された。2009年にはユネスコの世界無形文化遺産に登録され,2014年〈和紙:日本の手漉和紙技術〉として,細川紙(埼玉県,現在は〈小川和紙〉のひとつ)及び本美濃紙(岐阜県)とともに,ユネスコ世界無形文化遺産に登録,再記載された。ナツミカン,カキ,ユリも栽培。大平桜(天然記念物)がある。国道9号線が通じる。2005年10月那賀郡旭町,金城町,弥栄村と浜田市へ編入。

三隅[町]【みすみ】

山口県大津郡,日本海に面する旧町。仙崎湾に入る三隅川流域低地を中心とする農漁村地域。主集落は左岸にある古くからの市場町で,山陰本線が通じる。海岸は北長門海岸国定公園の一部。2005年3月大津郡日置町,油谷町と長門市へ編入。67.40km2。6321人(2003)。
