Government-sponsored exhibitions held in 1882 (Meiji 15) and 1884. The Meiji Restoration and the subsequent trend towards modernization led to a decline in indigenous Japanese art, but reflection eventually took hold and momentum for the preservation of traditions grew. This was sparked by the success of the Domestic Industrial Exposition held in 1877 and the movement of the Ryuchikai, founded in 1879 (organized by Sano Tsunetami and others for the appreciation and research of ancient art). The momentum was greatly boosted by the lecture given by the American Fenollosa at the Ryuchikai, who was invited to Tokyo University and spoke about the need to reject Western painting and respect Japanese painting.
