A perennial plant of the legume family used as pasture and turf grass. It is also called white clover. When simply called clover, this species is often referred to. Native to warm regions from Europe to Asia, it is now widely cultivated around the world from the subtropics to the subarctic, and has also become naturalized. It was introduced to Japan during the Edo period, when clover hay was used as a packing material for glass products imported from the Netherlands to Nagasaki. For this reason, the name "packing grass" was given to all clovers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
