Prince Kuniyoshi

Japanese:
Prince Kuniyoshi
Year of death: March 20, 1326 (April 23, 1326)
Year of birth: 1300
The first son of Emperor Go-Nijo. The legitimate grandson of the retired Emperor Go-Uda. His mother was the daughter of the councilor Fujiwara Munechika. He was also known as "Kuninaga." After Go-Nijo's early death, Go-Uda decided that Kuniyoshi would be the heir to the Daikakuji line, and decided to assign the role of interim to his second son, Prince Sonji (later Emperor Go-Daigo). Sonji ascended to the throne in February 1318, but Kuniyoshi was made crown prince the following March, and was promised the position of the next emperor. However, Go-Daigo was unwilling to give up the throne, and a feud arose between them. When Go-Uda died in June 1324, the feud intensified. Kuniyoshi continued to work on ascending to the throne, but he died in March 1326 without ascending to the throne. According to the Shinnō Shōtōki, Kuniyoshi had a condition called 'crane knee disease'.
