An old town occupying the tip of the Uto Peninsula in Uto District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a port town after the construction of the West Port in 1887. After the opening of the Sankaku Line in 1899, it developed as a cargo and passenger port after the East Port was opened in 1999. It is also the starting point of the Amakusa Five Bridges and a key tourist spot in Unzen-Amakusa National Park. Mandarin orange cultivation is thriving, and melons and strawberries are also produced. In January 2005, it merged with Shiranui Town in Uto District and Matsubashi Town, Ogawa Town, and Toyono Town in Shimomashiki District to become Uki City. 48.30 km2 . Population: 10,289 (2003). 熊本県宇土郡,宇土半島先端部を占める旧町。主集落は1887年の築港(西港)以来,港町として発達。1899年三角線開通後は年東港開港を経て貨客港として発展。天草五橋の起点でもあり,雲仙天草国立公園観光の要地。ミカン栽培が盛んで,メロン,イチゴなども産する。2005年1月宇土郡不知火町,下益城郡松橋町,小川町,豊野町と合併し市制,宇城市となる。48.30km2。1万289人(2003)。
