A port city on the Mediterranean coast in northwestern Libya. Located about 200 km east of Tripoli, it is a producer of ores. Carpet manufacturing is thriving here. In the past, it was the starting point of a caravan route connecting with Timbuktu in West Africa. During the Italian colonial period, it was an important military base. Population: 360,000 (1990).
