Soft lesions - Zejyou

Japanese:
Soft lesions - Zejyou

A type of screen used by nobles. Also called "zenjo," it means soft shoji screen. A decorative curtain hung between pillars or on the inside of a blind to be used as a partition. Made from plain silk. Unlike a kabeshiro, it is painted, has a wide border of purple twill around the edges, has silk stitching at the top, and is hung by a string. According to the section on Taikyo in the "Masake Sozokusho," the painting has a Takamatsu tree as its main body, with trees of the four seasons depicted, and it was called "Takamatsu no naru shoji." The same excerpt also states that the folding screens used in Higashisanjo Palace were painted with a picture of a Shosho (minor general) hunting in Sagano, which gives us an idea of what paintings of folding screens were like. In the "Annual Events Picture Scroll," in the scene of an internal banquet, a folding screen with a Chinese-style painting of landscape figures is hung on the inside of the west eaves of the Ryoki Palace, and in the scene of a grand banquet, a similar Chinese painting can be seen on the western corridor of the Genkimon Gate.
