...In other words, the Ospedale della Pietà (1346) was established as an affiliated institution of the hospital, and provided musical education to girls with musical talent. On the other hand, the Conservatorio Santa Maria di Loreto (1537) was established in Naples as an institution to provide musical education to poor boys in an orphanage, and the word "conservatorio" comes from the Italian word "conservare" (to preserve, to protect). Thus, almost all of the major Italian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries were students or teachers of these institutions.
