A unit of capacitance in the International System of Units (SI). It is one of the SI derived units, which is expressed by a unique name and symbol. The capacitance of a conductor that produces a potential difference of 1 volt due to a charge of 1 coulomb is 1 farad, and its symbol is F. This unit is too large for practical use, so microfarad (μF) and picofarad (pF) are actually used. When it was proposed at the International Electrical Congress in Paris in 1881, it was defined as the same value as the current microfarad, and equivalent to the capacitance of an undersea cable about one-third of a nautical mile (about 617 meters), but the current definition was adopted at the first general meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission in 1906. The farad was named after the British physicist Faraday.
