[Appearance of algae]
According to fossil records, algae appear on Earth as early as the Precambrian period, about 3 billion years ago. The oldest known algae fossil is Archaeosphaeroides larbertonensis , a spherical, cyanobacteria-like microfossil about 20 μm in diameter discovered in a layer from this period. Going further back in time, many fossils of cyanobacteria similar to modern-day ostracods have been found in layers dating back about 1.9 billion years.
