Dark juice - Yamijiru

Japanese:
Dark juice - Yamijiru

A hotpot dish made with whatever ingredients were on hand. It is not a dish that produces a delicious taste, but rather a kind of game that focuses on flavor. Several people bring their own unusual ingredients, without revealing to each other what they are. A little water is poured into the pot, it is put on the fire, the lights are turned off, and the ingredients that people have brought are added to the pot. After it has simmered for a while, people eat what is in the pot, either in the dark or with the lights on. The rule is not to add anything inedible or poisonous. Also, anything picked up with chopsticks must be eaten. Sometimes wonderful hodgepodge is produced, but sometimes people play pranks by adding sweet botamochi (rice cakes) or other ingredients, making the whole thing cloyingly sweet.
