Alexandroupolis (English spelling)
A town in northeastern Greece, near the border with Turkey. Population 34,535 (1981). There is a railway station between Thessaloniki and Istanbul, an airport, and a small artificial port. The current name has been in place since 1911, and during the Turkish period it was called Dedeagatch. Nearby are the remains of Trajannopolis, a stop station in the Roman Empire. Samothrace Island, famous for the unearthing of a statue of the goddess of victory (Nike), is 30km off the coast of the town and is connected by ferry. [Ikezawa Natsuki]
