Girardin, Émile de

Girardin, Émile de
Born: June 21, 1806 in Paris
Died April 27, 1881. Paris. French newspaper owner and politician. Born as the illegitimate son of Count Girardin. He initially aspired to be a writer, and became interested in newspapers around the time of the July Revolution of 1830. In 1831, he married the female writer G. Delphine. Around this time, he opened a salon in Paris, attracting leading politicians and literary figures. In 1836, he founded La Presse. Thanks to his groundbreaking attempt to base newspaper management on advertising revenue, the paper's subscription fee was 40 francs per year, which was incredibly low at the time. He also published newspaper novels, greatly expanding his readership. However, due to his strong Orléanist influence, he was rumored to be receiving government support, which led to a duel with A. Carrel of the newspaper National, which resulted in Carrel's death. He entered politics in 1834, and continued to be unprincipled as a politician. He wrote plays and novels, and also wrote political commentary, but he is highly regarded for his newspaper theory. His major work was the autobiographical novel Émile (1827).
