Shojiro Ishibashi

Japanese: 石橋正二郎 - いしばししょうじろう
Shojiro Ishibashi

Entrepreneur. Born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. After graduating from Kurume Commercial School, he took over the family tailoring business with his brother Tokujiro. He expanded the family business by specializing in tabi (socks) and selling "Asahi tabi" socks at a fixed price, and founded Nippon Tabi Co., Ltd. in 1918 (Taisho 7). In 1948, he manufactured and sold a new type of rubber-soled tabi socks with a stick-on sole under the name "Asahi Jika Tabi," which became a huge hit. He invested the huge amount of money he earned from mass manufacturing and selling jika tabi and cloth rubber shoes to start domestic production of automobile tires, and founded Bridgestone Tire Co., Ltd. in 1931 (Showa 6). After World War II, he handed over Nippon Rubber (formerly Nippon Tabi) to his brother and devoted himself to managing Bridgestone Tire Co., Ltd., and led the company to become the leader in the tire industry through a technical partnership with the American general rubber company Goodyear and aggressive capital investment measures in anticipation of motorization. He was also famous for collecting art, and established the Bridgestone Museum of Art in his headquarters building in Tokyo. In 1981, he donated the Ishibashi Cultural Center (Kurume City), which includes an art museum, and in 1969, the National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo).
