A general term for insects belonging to the family Cephidae of the order Hymenoptera. Because the second abdominal segment is slightly narrow, they may look like ichneumons at first glance, but they can be distinguished by their large pronotum and straight rear edge. There are many species that are around 15 mm in size. Insects of this family are widely distributed in the Holarctic region, and 10 species have been reported from Japan. Of these, the rose cephalopod wasp Syrista similis is a pest that lays eggs on new shoots of roses, and adults appear once a year from late April to mid-May.
