…A principle of blood circulation proposed by Adolf Fick (1829-1901) around 1872. It is essentially an expression of the law of conservation of mass. In other words, the amount of a particular substance flowing into a particular organ from the arteries in a unit time is the sum of the amount taken into the organ from the bloodstream and the amount flowing out into the veins. If the amount taken into the organ in a unit time is Q , the concentration in arterial blood is C _A , and the concentration in venous blood is C _V , and the blood flow rates of the arteries and veins are equal and considered to be F , then Q = F ( C _A - C _V ) and F = Q / ( C _A - C _V ). …
