A branch of economics that analyzes and studies insurance. Insurance studies, as economics and social sciences, analyze and clarify the economic phenomena surrounding insurance in modern society, clarify the issues while grasping the laws there, and aim to solve and improve them. Initially, insurance studies developed as an academic field related to insurance law, studying the rights and obligations of both insurers and policyholders, as well as insurance contracts and precedents. However, with the introduction of life insurance in the late 18th century and social insurance at the end of the 19th century, mathematical research based on life tables and interest rates began to be conducted. Furthermore, since the 19th century, attempts have been made to comprehensively systematize insurance law and insurance mathematics from a national economic perspective, rather than applying them to individual insurance. Insurance economics in Japan has reached a fairly high level, mainly from the perspective of economics. However, there are many issues remaining regarding insurance management, and full-scale research is finally beginning to be carried out in various fields. In addition, legal research on insurance, which has a long tradition, is thriving and at a high level, and it still forms a unique field. Recently, in relation to related systems such as social insurance and social security, researchers in fields such as finance, economic policy, social security, social welfare, home economics, finance, and pollution have turned their attention to insurance, and a situation is emerging in which insurance researchers can no longer remain indifferent to these fields.
