A general term for oxoacids of boron, including orthoboric acid, metaboric acid, and tetraboric acid. [Orthoboric acid] The chemical formula is B(OH) 3 . It is sometimes simply called boric acid. It is naturally found as borate stone in volcanic fumaroles, and the one in Tuscany, Italy, is famous. It is easily produced by reacting borate with sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc., and can also be obtained by reacting boric oxide with water. It has a specific gravity of 1.48 and a melting point of 170.9°C. It is a transparent, colorless, hexagonal flake.
