Boric acid (English spelling)

Japanese: ホウ酸(硼酸) - ほうさん（英語表記）boric acid

A general term for oxoacids of boron, including orthoboric acid, metaboric acid, and tetraboric acid.

The chemical formula is B(OH) ₃ . It is sometimes simply called boric acid. It is naturally found as borate stone in volcanic fumaroles, and the one in Tuscany, Italy, is famous. It is easily produced by reacting borate with sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc., and can also be obtained by reacting boric oxide with water. It has a specific gravity of 1.48 and a melting point of 170.9°C. It is a transparent, colorless, hexagonal flake. Its structure is a giant molecule of planar BO ₃ groups connected by hydrogen bonds, as shown in Figure 1.

［オルトホウ酸］
　化学式B(OH)₃。これを単にホウ酸ということもある。天然にはホウ酸石として火山の噴気口に産し，イタリアのトスカナ地方のものは有名である。ホウ酸塩を硫酸，塩酸等と反応させるとたやすく生じ，また酸化ホウ素を水と反応させても得られる。比重1.48，融点170.9℃。透明な無色の六角片状である。構造は図1に示すように，平面状のBO₃団が水素結合でつながった巨大分子である。
