A painting with a taste for haiku. It praises haiku, haiku poems, or haiku poems, and is painted in simple strokes of washes or ink, resonating with the words of the praise or explaining the content of the praise. It is not necessarily a self-praise. Its origins are unknown, and while Basho, Kyoriku, and Sakaki Hyakusen had already painted what could be called haiku paintings, it was Yosa Buson who perfected it artistically. Buson himself called his works "dramatic haiku paintings," and left behind excellent works such as "Oku no Hosomichi" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) and "Wakatake" (Young Bamboos). At the end of the Edo period, Watanabe Kazan produced the print "Haigafu," and around this time the term "haiga" became established. Since then, it has remained one of the most widely used forms of Japanese painting to this day.
