…In 1620, he entered Leiden University, but soon left to study under J. van Swanenburgh, and then under P. Lastman in Amsterdam. Lastman was a representative of the so-called Pre-Rembrandtists, a group of narrative painters who introduced the influence of Caravaggio and Elsheimer from Italy to the Netherlands. He preferred to draw on the Old Testament, and in contrast to the previous generation of Mannerists, his paintings, which rejected allegory and aimed for clear narrative, had a lasting impact on Rembrandt.
