A term used to refer to oasis settlers in Central Asia. During the Kara-Khanid period, it was used to mean "merchant," and during the Mongol Empire period, it appeared in historical documents under the names Sarta'ul, Sartaqtai, Sartaqčin, etc., and referred to Central Asian merchants. During the Timurid period, Sart was often used to refer to Iranian oases settlers, but since the Uzbek period, it has been used to refer to settlers of oasis cities in general, regardless of whether they were Iranian or Turkish. The word is thought to be derived from the Sanskrit word sārtha (caravan). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
