Black gold is powdered, and the engraved patterns on metal vessels are coated with borax, which is then filled in and heated, baked, and polished to a finish. The black stands out against the silver and gold background, creating an aesthetic effect. Many examples remain in silverware from Rome, Sassanid Persia, and the Italian Renaissance.
