An arts term. (1) Black gold. A black alloy made by mixing silver, copper, and lead in a 3:2:1 ratio and adding a large amount of sulfur to the mixture to make a melted black alloy. (2) A technique for inlaying black gold, an old metalworking technique that began around the 15th century BCE in ancient Egypt and the Mycenaean civilization. Black gold is powdered, and the engraved patterns on metal vessels are coated with borax, which is then filled in and heated, baked, and polished to a finish. The black stands out against the silver and gold background, creating an aesthetic effect. Many examples remain in silverware from Rome, Sassanid Persia, and the Italian Renaissance.
