Shell money - Baika

Shell barter valuables. In Oceania, especially Melanesia and New Guinea, shell money is a vital social exchange medium that goes beyond the mere act of commodity trading. Shell money is a valuable object that is flaunted, given, or redistributed to create social relations (marriage, initiation into secret societies, political alliances between groups), to resolve discord in social relations (through donations to ancestors, or compensation for murder or insults), and to create or symbolize a higher social status (through potlatch consumption, or through accumulation and redistribution by big men or chiefs). Representative examples include the red shell necklaces of Rossell Island, the necklaces and bracelets used in the kula exchange in the Trobriand Islands, the Solomon Islands necklaces, and the pearl shell money of Yap. The main gifts in the Kula trade circle found among islands north of New Guinea (Trobriand Islands, Dobu Island, etc.) are non-practical, symbolic items such as red shell necklaces and white shell bracelets. These valuable items are not necessities of life, nor are they of practical use as ornaments. They are described as being like the jewels in a European crown, symbolizing succession to the throne. Shell money consisting of a large number of shell beads strung on a string was known among the Iroquois and Algonquian societies of Native Americans in North America, and a type of shell money called "kauri" was also in circulation in West Africa.

In addition, it is believed that cowrie shells were in circulation in China before cloth coins, sword coins, and other currency came into circulation, and characters related to economics, such as "buy" and "wealth," often include the character "shell."

貝製の交換用貴重品。オセアニア地域、とくにメラネシアとニューギニアにおいて、商品取引交換の手段としての意味をはるかに超え、社会的交換手段として生き生きと交換されている。貴重品としての貝貨は、ある社会関係（結婚、秘密結社への入社、集団間の政治同盟）を生み出すために、また、社会諸関係のなかの不和を解消（祖先への寄進、殺人や侮辱に対する償いによって）するために、そして、上位の社会的地位を創出（ポトラッチ的な消費によって、またビッグマンや首長が蓄積し再分配することによって）したり、象徴化したりするために、見せびらかしたり、贈与したり、再分配したりする貴重品ということができる。代表的なものをあげれば、ロッセル島の赤貝の首飾り、トロブリアンド島などのクラ交換に使用される首飾りと腕輪、ソロモン諸島の首飾り、ヤップ島の真珠貝貨などである。ニューギニア北方の島々（トロブリアンド島、ドブ島など）の間にみられるクラ交易環の中心的贈答品は、非実用的で象徴的価値をもつ赤貝製の首飾りと白貝製の腕輪である。これらの貴重品は生活必需品でもなく、装飾品としても実用には供されない。ヨーロッパにおいて例えれば、王位継承を象徴する王冠の宝石のようなものと説明されている。北米先住民のイロコイ人、アルゴンキン人の社会でも貝製数珠(じゅず)玉を多数紐(ひも)に通した貝貨が知られており、西アフリカでも「カウリ」とよばれる貝貨が流通している。

　なお、中国では布銭、刀銭などの流通以前にコヤスガイ（子安貝）が貨幣として流通したと考えられ、買、財など経済に関係する字がしばしば「貝」の字を伴っている。
