The Jeu de Paume (hereafter abbreviated as Paume), which began to be played in French monasteries in the 11th century, is considered to be the prototype of tennis-type games. Paume means palm, and modern tennis is an evolution of a game played before that in which players hit the ball with the palm, fist, or forearm.
