First, the Aomori-Hirosaki section was opened in December 1894 as the Ou Kita Line, and the Fukushima-Yonezawa section was opened in May 1899 as the Ou Minami Line. It was subsequently extended and opened one after another, and in September 1905, the Fukushima-Aomori section was completed with the opening of the Yuzawa-Yokote section, and the line was renamed the Ou Main Line.
