Fernando Gallego

Spanish painter from around 1440 to after 1507. He lived in Salamanca from 1473 onwards and was active in the city and the surrounding province, producing numerous altarpieces. He was one of the leading figures of the Castilian school in late 15th-century Spain, which was influenced by Flemish painting. His connections with D. Bouts and K. Witts can be seen, and he excelled in dramatic scenes with brutally realistic expressions. [Kamiyoshi Keizo]

スペインの画家。1473年以後サラマンカに住み，同市および近県で活躍，数多くの祭壇衝立（ついたて）画を描いた。フランドル絵画の影響を受けた15世紀後半のスペインで，カスティリャ派を代表する一人。D.バウツやK.ウィッツとの関連がうかがえ，残酷なまでにリアルな表現によるドラマティックな場面を得意とする。【神吉敬三】
