…It belongs to the Finnic group of the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family, and together with Cheremis (Mari) forms Volga-Finnic. It is spoken in a wide area, mainly in the Republic of Mordovia, south of the city of Kazan in the middle reaches of the Volga River. There are 1,154,000 speakers (1989), of which about 70% have it as their mother tongue. It is divided into the Erza dialect and the Moksha dialect, but because it is difficult to understand each other, they have established their own standard written language. Nouns change into 12 cases and have fixed endings. …
