A city occupying the northern half of Tanegashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It includes Mage Island off the west coast. The central city area on the west coast developed as a castle town for the Tanegashima clan. It is the center of the Osumi Islands and the starting point for bus transportation on the islands. There is a regular ferry route between the city and Kagoshima City. The surrounding hills produce a lot of sugar cane, potatoes, and snow peas, and black pigs are also raised there. Iron sand was once collected on the coast, and the manufacture of seed scissors remains a traditional industry. Mage Island is famous for flying fish fishing. 205.66 ^km2 . Population 16,951 (2010).

鹿児島県種子島北半部を占める市。1958年市制。西方沖合の馬毛(まげ)島を含む。西岸にある中心市街は種子島氏の城下町として発達。大隅諸島の中心地で，島内バス交通の起点。鹿児島市との間に定期航路がある。周辺丘陵地ではサトウキビ，ジャガイモ，キヌサヤエンドウの産が多く，黒豚の飼育も盛ん。かつて海岸では砂鉄採取が行われ，種子鋏製造が伝統産業として残る。馬毛島はトビウオ漁で有名。205.66km²。１万6951人（2010）。
