Located near Munich, Nymphenberg is a typical suburban palace of German Baroque. Nymphenberg means "Castle of the Nymphs." It was originally a summer palace given to his wife by Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria, and was built between 1664 and 1674 by Italian Agostino Barelli (c. 1627-87) and others. In the early 18th century, Elector Max Emanuel was inspired by the Palace of Versailles and expanded it into a Baroque palace spreading out on both sides, with architect Giovanni Antonio Viscardi (1645-1713) and others in charge.
