Born March 9, 1965. Usulutan. Salvadoran politician and sports anchor. President (2004-09). Full name: Elías Antonio Saca González. His grandparents were Catholic Palestinians who emigrated to El Salvador from Bethlehem in the early 20th century. In 1982, he launched a sports program on Radio Sonora, and later became a sports anchor on TV Channel 4, where he served as sports director for over 10 years. In 1984, he enrolled at the University of El Salvador (majoring in journalism), but did not complete his degree. In 1987, he helped launch Radio America. In 1993, he left Channel 4 and Radio America to launch a new radio station, SAMIX, with his wife. He has won numerous awards in the broadcasting industry, and the success of SAMIX has led to leadership positions in industry and civic organizations. From 1997 to 2001, he served as president of the Salvadoran Radio Broadcasting Union and president of the International Radio Association's Committee for Freedom of Expression. In 2001, he became president of the National Confederation of Private Enterprises (ANEP). In 1989, he joined the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA). In the 2004 presidential election, he was nominated as ARENA's presidential candidate, and after a tough election campaign, he won in March with 57.7% of the vote. The biggest challenge during his term was the increased activity of gang organizations. In 2006, he became the first Central American country to put into effect the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) with the United States. In 2008, he also agreed with the United States to a cross-border gang eradication plan through information sharing.
