NO (30.01). Also called nitric oxide. It is obtained by the direct reaction of nitrogen and oxygen at high temperatures, or by the oxidation of ammonia with a platinum catalyst. In nature, it is mainly produced by lightning. In the laboratory, it is obtained by the reaction of copper flakes with sulfuric acid. It is a colorless gas at room temperature. Its melting point is -163.6 °C, its boiling point is -151.8 °C. It is blue in both liquid and solid form. Its dipole moment is 0.16 D. N-O0.114 nm. It has one unpaired electron, is paramagnetic, and reacts well with other free radicals. This property is used to detect free radicals on polymer surfaces. It becomes nitrogen dioxide when exposed to air. It reacts with halogens to form nitrosyl halide NOX. It is one of the nitrogen oxides (NO x ) that are a problem in air pollution, and is a cause of photochemical smog and acid rain, as well as the destruction of the ozone layer. It is used as an intermediate in the production of nitric acid, as a bleaching agent for rayon, and in the production of semiconductors. It is toxic. NO(30.01).
