Empire State Building

A super-tall building in Manhattan, New York. A representative example of a skyscraper. Designed by Shreve, Lamb, Herman Architects at the request of Pierre, one of the fourth generation of the DuPont family. Plans were made in the 1920s during the economic boom, but construction began in 1930, just after the Great Depression, and it was completed the following year. It was the last work in the second period of super-tall construction. At first, there were no tenants and it remained empty, but now it houses about 10,000 tenants and can accommodate about 25,000 people. At 102 stories and 381 meters, it held the throne as the tallest building in the world for about 40 years, but today it is the third tallest building in the world after the Sears Tower (Chicago) and the World Trade Center (New York).

ニューヨークのマンハッタン地区にある超高層建築。スカイスクレーパー(摩天楼)の代表的作例。デュポン家4代目の一人，ピエールの注文でシュリーブ･ラム･ハーマン建築事務所が設計。好景気に沸く1920年代に計画されたが，建設開始は大恐慌直後の30年で，翌年竣工。第2期超高層建設時代の最後の作品となった。当初はテナントもなく，がら空きの状態が続いたが，現在は約1万のテナントが入り，約2万5000人を収容。102階，381mの世界最高の建物として約40年間王座を保ってきたが，今日ではシアーズ･タワー(シカゴ)，世界貿易センター(ニューヨーク)についで世界第3位。
