A freely associated state of the United States (Estado Libre Asociado in Spanish, Commonwealth in English). Its capital is San Juan. It consists of the main island, located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, and several surrounding small islands such as Culebra and Vieques. To the west, separated by a strait about 80 km, are Hispaniola, which includes Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and to the east are the U.S. Virgin Islands. The main island is roughly rectangular, measuring about 180 km east to west and about 60 km north to south, and its total area, including the surrounding islands, is 8,896 km2, which is about half the size of Shikoku, Japan.
