Founded in 1477 in Tübingen, southwestern Germany, by Duke Eberhard of Württemberg, the university was officially named Eberhard-Karls-Universität. Its first rector was the humanist Nauklerus. It subsequently became a stronghold of humanism, attracting such scholars as Heinrich Bebel, Melanchthon, and Reuchlin. In 1536, Camerarius reformed the university, modelled on the universities of Wittenberg and Marburg, and the university became one of the centres of the Lutheran Reformation movement.
