... The first president of this federation was Ahmadou Ahidjo (1924-89) from East Cameroon, and JN Foncha from West Cameroon was elected vice-president. The allocation of seats in the National Assembly was 40 for the East and 10 for the West, which reflected the difference in area and population, and the East was favored. Furthermore, the federation gradually became more and more of a formality, and institutional reforms were made to allow the federal government to exercise greater authority over the regions. In 1966, a new party, the Union Nationale de Cameroon (UNC), was formed, combining the existing parties, to form a single party spanning both the East and West. During this time, the anti-government guerilla struggle of the UPC, which had been outlawed after carrying out an armed uprising in 1955, gradually weakened, and the Ahidjo regime became unshakable. ...
