Tubular bells

Tubular bells
A type of percussion instrument. Tubes made of a special alloy, 2 mm thick and 38 mm in diameter, are cut to lengths between 160 cm and 94 cm and tuned. To allow for free vibration, holes are drilled in the top, a string is passed through, and the tubes are hung chromatically in a metal frame. They are sounded by striking the stoppered upper shoulders with a leather mallet. A vibration stopper is fitted to the centre of the frame to prevent the struck tubes from hitting each other, and a damper that is movable by a pedal is attached below that. They ring like a church bell.
