The world's largest highway network. The first plan was announced by Congress in 1944 as a foundation to support the economy, society, culture, and national defense of the United States, and currently about 65,000 km has been completed, with less than 1% of the entire plan remaining. It connects the capitals of 43 states, connects about 90% of cities with populations of over 50,000, and handles more than 20% of all traffic, despite only being just over 1% of the total road length. What helped make this possible was the Highway Trust Fund system, which was started in 1956 and uses revenues from federal taxes such as gasoline taxes for road construction, and 90% of the construction costs are paid out as subsidies to the states from this fund.
