1703‐62 An Indian Islamic thinker. Born in Delhi, his father was a famous Sufi scholar. He lived during the period of the collapse of the Mughal Empire. When he was around 30 years old, he studied Islamic theology and jurisprudence in Mecca and Medina. After returning to India, he taught ordinary Muslims and called for reform of social customs among Muslims that had been influenced by Hinduism. He aimed to purify Islamic thought, but he did not limit himself to Islamic theology and religious thought; he also criticized the social system of the time.
