Shah Wali Allah

An Indian Islamic thinker. Born in Delhi, his father was a famous Sufi scholar. He lived during the period of the collapse of the Mughal Empire. When he was around 30 years old, he studied Islamic theology and jurisprudence in Mecca and Medina. After returning to India, he taught ordinary Muslims and called for reform of social customs among Muslims that had been influenced by Hinduism. He aimed to purify Islamic thought, but he did not limit himself to Islamic theology and religious thought; he also criticized the social system of the time.

インドのイスラム思想家。デリーに生まれ，父は有名なスーフィーの学者。彼の生涯は，ムガル帝国の崩壊の時期にあたっていた。30歳前後のころ，メッカ，メディナで，イスラム神学･法学を学び，帰国後，一般ムスリムへの教育にあたり，ヒンドゥー教の影響を受けたムスリムの間の社会慣習の改革を訴えた。彼はイスラムの思想の浄化を目ざしたが，単に，イスラム神学･宗教思想の面にとどまらず，当時の社会体制にまで批判を向けた。
