The ancient Roman name for a river that flows into the Adriatic Sea near Rimini in northern Italy. There is some debate as to whether it is the same as the present-day Rubicone River (also known as the Fiumicino River). It was the border between Italy and Cisalpine Gallia, and it was customary for troops to disarm when crossing this river to enter Italy. It is said that in 49 B.C., Caesar led his army across the river, shouted "the die is cast," and plunged into the civil war with Pompey. Since then, any action taken with great determination was said to be "crossing the Rubicon." → Related article Cisalpino Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
