Eugene Pleasants Odum

1913‐2002
American ecologist. Born in New Hampshire. He first studied the ecology of birds, but after World War II he moved to research on material production in biological communities. In 1954 he published a textbook called "Fundamentals of Ecology" that strongly advocated this position, contributing to the development of so-called production ecology. He was also knowledgeable about radiobiology and held a central position in the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. In the third revised edition of the textbook published in 1971, he emphasized the danger of biological accumulation of radioactivity in the environment and warned against nuclear testing and careless use of nuclear power generation.

アメリカの生態学者。ニューハンプシャー州生れ。はじめ鳥の生態を研究したが，第2次世界大戦後は生物群集の物質生産の研究に移り，1954年この立場を強く主張した教科書《生態学の基礎Fundamentals of Ecology》を発表して，いわゆる生産生態学の発展に寄与した。放射線生物学にもくわしく，アメリカ原子力委員会の中枢部に席をおき，71年の上記教科書改訂3版では環境中の放射能の生物的濃縮の危険を強調し，核実験および安易な原子力発電に警告を発した。
