The Shan Plateau is a hilly region east of Mandalay, 1,000 to 1,300 meters above sea level, and in the north it is connected to the mountainous region of Yunnan Province, China. The Thanlwin River runs north to south, forming a deep gorge, and the region is rich in mineral resources. The state capital is Taunggyi. In the 1960s, the movement for autonomy and independence developed into armed struggle. In December 1993, drug lord Khun Sa led a militia and declared independence. The eastern Shan State borders Thailand, Laos and Myanmar and is located in the Golden Triangle, an area where poppy cultivation is thriving, and drug trafficking and smuggling are sources of funding for anti-government forces.
