A nematode of the Aphelenchoidae family. It is a nematode that causes the leaves of chrysanthemums and other plants to wither, hence its English name. It is 0.7-1.2 mm long, is hermaphroditic, elongated, and swims actively in water. It can survive in dead leaves for more than three years and is resistant to low temperatures. Buds at the base of the ground that are infested from autumn to winter do not sprout well in early spring. Infection by nematodes begins in the lower leaves, and the nematodes that enter through the stomata destroy the soft tissue but not the cortical tissue, and because their movement is blocked by the veins, the browning of the leaves becomes somewhat blister-like and is separated by the veins.

アフェレンコイデス科のセンチュウ。キクなどの葉を枯らすセンチュウで，英名はこれによる。体長0.7～1.2mm，雌雄同形で細長く，水中で活発に泳ぐ。枯葉の中で3年以上生存し，低温にも強い。秋から冬に寄生を受けた地際部の芽は春先の萌芽が悪い。センチュウの感染は下葉から始まり，気孔から侵入したセンチュウは柔組織を破壊するが皮層組織は破壊せず，葉脈で行動をさえぎられるために，やや水ぶくれ状の褐変が葉脈に区切られた形で進行する。
