[died] November 13, 1861. Florence. English poet. He was strongly influenced by T. Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School, and formed a close friendship with his son Matthew, who later became a poet. The latter's masterpiece, "Thirsies," is a tribute to Clough. In 1852, he went to America at Emerson's invitation. He is remembered for his lyric poems, including the love story "The Bothie of Tober-na-Vuolich" (1848) and "Say not, the Struggle Nought Availeth" (49), which is an ode to religious doubt.

Died: February 27, 1892. Cambridge. A promoter of higher education for women in England. First principal of Newnham College, Cambridge. Brother of the poet Arthur. Supporter of higher education for women along with H. Sidgewick. Contributed to the establishment of the North of England Council for the Promotion of Higher Education for Women, serving as secretary (1867-70) and chairman (1873-74). In 1871, she was recommended as headmaster for the establishment of a women's dormitory at Cambridge University. Following its success and development, Newnham Hall and Newnham College were established in 1875, and she was appointed as the first headmaster of each.

イギリスの女子高等教育の推進者。ケンブリッジのニューナム・カレッジの初代校長。詩人アーサーの弟。女子高等教育運動の支持者として H.シジュウィックらと活躍。北イギリス女子高等教育振興評議会の設立に貢献し，書記 (1867～70) と会長 (73～74) をつとめた。 1871年，ケンブリッジ大学の女子学寮設立の際寮長に推され，その成功と発展に従って 75年ニューナム・ホール，75年ニューナム・カレッジが設立され，その都度初代の長に就任した。
