Year of death: 28 June 1, Kōwa 1 (1099.7.18) Year of birth: 11 September 1062 (16 October 1062) A nobleman in the Heian period. His pen name was Go-Nijo-dono. He was the son of Regent and Kanpaku Michizane and Minamoto no Michifusa's daughter Reiko, who was ranked as Junior First Rank. In 1077, he was appointed councilor. After serving as provisional Chunagon and provisional Dainagon, he became Minister of the Interior in 1083. In 1094, he was handed over the position of Kanpaku by his father. He had a rigid personality and was critical of the retired Emperor Shirakawa's use of the Zuryo as a trusted vassal and arbitrary control over politics, and is said to have said, "How can a chariot be driven at the gates of an emperor like this?" (Imakagami). In the same year, he responded resolutely to a strong appeal by the monks of Enryaku-ji Temple, and after his death, rumors spread that he was cursed by Sanno. He died of a sore throat. The Honcho Seiki describes the time when Michizane was Kanpaku as "during the Kaho and Eichou periods, the world was in a state of tranquility." After his death, Emperor Shirakawa's cloistered government began in earnest, and the status of the regent family declined. Michimichi loved learning, and studied Chinese classics and poetry under Oe Masafusa and Koremune Takamoto, two of the leading scholars of the time. He also learned about official affairs by reading diaries and ceremonial books, such as the "Kureki" written by his ancestor Fujiwara no Michisuke. It is said that he ordered Oe Masafusa to create the "Go-keshidai" in order to compile the etiquette for such ceremonies. His diary, "Go-Nijo Michimichi-ki," records that he viewed and copied dozens of books, giving us a glimpse of how much he studied. He was also beautiful, and excelled in many areas, including Chinese poetry, waka poetry, music, calligraphy, and kemari. <References> Takamune Itsue, "Study on the Heian, Kamakura, and Muromachi Families" (Sanae Yoshida) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
