A city in northern Ohio, USA. It is located on the south shore of Lake Erie, 40 km west of Cleveland, at the mouth of the Black River. Founded in 1836, it fell into decline for a time. It recovered in 1872 when a railroad was established in the Ohio coalfields to the southeast, and in 1874 it was named Lorraine after the Lorraine region of France. Since the establishment of a steel company in 1890, it has developed into an industrial city. Shipbuilding, automobile, and machinery factories have also been established here. The population is diverse, including immigrants from Eastern Europe and Puerto Rico, as well as African Americans. Population 71,245 (1990).
