Letter of conduct addressed to the governor

Japanese: 知行宛行状 - ちぎょうあてがいじょう

A document given by a lord to his vassals when assigning land or office in the Middle Ages and early modern times. It is also written as a chigyo kogyojo and is also called an atekoijo. The document was mainly issued in the form of a Shogun's sleeve seal shimono or Shogunate Mandokoro shimono in the Kamakura period, a Shogun's official seal gosho (imperial edict) in the Muromachi period, and a hanmono or inkanjo in the Sengoku period. In the Edo period, documents issued by the Shogun to his hatamoto and by daimyo to their vassals were called chigyo kogyojo, and in the early Edo period, they were issued in the form of a shuinjo from the Shogun to his hatamoto, and in the form of a hanmono or black sealjo from daimyo to their vassals.

中世・近世を通じ，所領・所職などの知行を充行(あておこな)う時，主君から家臣に対し与えられた文書。知行充行状とも記し，〈あておこないじょう〉ともいう。文書形式はおもに鎌倉時代には将軍袖判下文もしくは幕府政所下文，室町時代には将軍御判御教書(ごはんのみぎょうしょ)，戦国時代には判物・印判状で発給された。江戸時代には将軍から旗本へ，また大名からその家臣に対し出されたものを知行宛行状と称し，将軍から旗本へは江戸時代初期に朱印状で，大名からその家臣へは判物ないし黒印状の形式で発給された。
