A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family (APG classification: Saxifragaceae). The rhizome is thin and spreads horizontally, branching well and producing many branches above ground. The leaves are spatula- or wedge-shaped and densely packed. In July and August, 2-10 flowers bloom on a 3-13cm flower stalk. The five petals are white or pale yellow with dark yellow and red dots. There are 10 stamens. The ovary is superior. It grows on rocks in high mountains and is distributed in Honshu north of the Chubu region, Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, and Karafuto (Sakhalin). The name comes from the fact that it was discovered on Shikotan Island. [Michio Wakabayashi March 18, 2020] From July to August, 2 to 10 flowers bloom at the end of the flower stalk. They are white or pale yellow with dark yellow and red dots. ©Shogakukan Photo by Fujio Aoyama "> Shikotansou Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
